My flavor's good for the soul, but my purpose's not always to be eaten. My work's good for the sole, especially when you walk the path less beaten.

I have a deep red glow, but I do not have a place for me to go. I am often seen in the dark night sky, flying up and up until I die.

With fire and hammer, I shape the unyielding, turning metal to blade and horseshoe gleaming. Though I don no armor, I forge the knight's shield, crafting tools for battles in every field.

Sometimes I am thick, sometimes I am thin. Sometimes I'm alone, but I should have a twin. Sometimes I am black, sometimes I am white. Sometimes I am short, sometimes I am tall. It's better, when it's hot, if I'm not there at all.
