in cold dawn air i guard your skin and hold your warmth close as wind begins to bite hard i travel with you through rain and snow yet rest upon your shoulders like a quiet shield i do not open like doors but wrap instead around your form to keep the chill away i am worn by many yet owned by one and i carry pockets secrets and stories within my seams when days grow warmer i fade from sight yet linger near awaiting colder times to serve again i may be light or heavy plain or grand but always faithful in my quiet duty against the cold sometimes adorned with buttons zippers or hoods i change my face yet keep my purpose true what am i that hugs you tight without a heartbeat and stands between your warmth and winter air
